Summary
Enterasys Networks
switches and routers
demonstrated broad
interoperability with 18
other switches for
advanced LAN and
routing functions at
Layer 2 and Layer 3.
In a world of ever-
evolving standards and
tight budgets, network
managers searching for
new equipment need to
know that the switches
they purchase inter-
operate with their current
infrastructure to ensure
uninterrupted support for
various standardized and
non-standardized
functions.
Engineers tested 23
switches from nine
vendors to determine the
various levels of
interoperability offered.
In Layer 2 inter-
operability tests, all of the
Enterasys equipment
tested — the SecureStack
A2, SecureStack B3 and
SecureStack C3 switches
and Matrix N DFE and
Matrix X routers —
demonstrated inter-
operability with switches
from 3Com, Alcatel-
Lucent, Cisco Systems,
Extreme Networks,
Foundry Networks,
Fujitsu, IBM Nortel, and
HP. See Figure 2 for more
details.
(IBM Nortel and HP
blade-switches were
manufactured by Blade
Network Technologies.)
In Layer 3 interoperability tests,
the Enterasys Matrix N-DFE
and Matrix X routers achieved
broad interoperability using
popular IPv4 routing protocols
like RIPv2, BGP4 and OSPF;
IP Multicasting using PIM
Sparse Mode, and Virtual
Router Redundancy Protocol
(VRRP) with a variety of
products from 3Com, Alcatel-
Lucent, Cisco Systems, Foundry
Networks, Extreme Networks,
IBM Nortel and HP.
Note: BGP4 and PIM-Sparse
Mode were supported only by
the Matrix X Secure Core
Router. See Figure 3 for more
details.
Layer 2 Functions
Auto-negotiation
The Enterasys switches and
routers interoperated with all of
the switches tested that
supported auto-negotiation on
Fast Ethernet and Gigabit
Ethernet interfaces. Auto-
negotiation was not tested on
10GbE interfaces of the
participating devices under test.
